Reading Stone Decay: What Your Building Is Telling You

Stone doesn't fail randomly. Every pattern of decay has a specific cause — water ingress, salt crystallisation, biological growth, pollution, frost, or structural movement. The skill is reading these signs before reaching for a chisel.

Spalling and Delamination

When thin layers peel away from the stone face, it usually means trapped moisture is cycling through freeze-thaw or salt crystallisation. The stone is otherwise sound — the decay is surface-deep. The question is: why is moisture trapped here? Often the answer is a cement repair elsewhere forcing water through this stone instead.

Treatment: identify and remove the moisture trap (usually inappropriate pointing). Let the wall breathe. The spalling often stabilises once the cause is removed — without any direct intervention to the stone itself.

Black Crusts

The sooty black skin found on sheltered surfaces of urban limestone. This is sulphation — atmospheric SO₂ reacting with calcium carbonate to form calcium sulphate (gite). It forms on surfaces protected from direct rain, which would otherwise wash it away.

Under the crust, the stone is often converting to powder. But removing the crust aggressively (pressure washing, abrasive cleaning) can remove more original stone than leaving it in place. Careful assessment determines whether to clean, consolidate, or simply monitor.

Biological Growth

Algae, lichen, and moss indicate persistent dampness. On a well-maintained building, exposed stone should dry between rain events. If it's perpetually damp enough to support growth, there's likely a drainage failure above — blocked gutter, failed flashing, or a missing drip detail sending water where it shouldn't go.

Fix the water management first. The biology will retreat on its own once the surface dries. Biocide without fixing the water source is treating the symptom while the cause continues.

Cracking Patterns

Vertical cracks through stone usually indicate structural movement — settlement, thermal expansion, or overloading. These require engineer assessment before any stone repair, because filling a structural crack with mortar doesn't address the force that created it.

Horizontal cracks along bedding planes are different — they often indicate that the stone was set incorrectly (face-bedded rather than naturally-bedded). Water enters the horizontal laminations and freezes. This is common in 19th-century work where speed was prioritised over correct orientation.
